so a 20g high would be good for life? if not when should I consider upgrading?

kk thanks for the fast reply also i've heard that over filtration is almost a must for these guys would running and Eheim 2217 be good?

all puffers basically we use spray bars to drive the food debris to the front of the tank. the most extreme example i having a small mbu in a 90gal with 750gal of filtration nameplate... over filter all puffers and make major water changes... we syphom organic debris at the front of the tank daily.. reduces water changes.. a lot..

A over infiltrated 20 should be fine, just make sure it is decorated appropriately for a lurker

20L would definitely be better than 20H.
