They are beeing commercially bred in the Amazon, not sure where the stock is being allotted. My guess would be mostly exportation for aquaria and maybe food fish. There was a member here breeding them, I can't remember his username. I'd like to see what he has to say.

They are being breed all over the amazon finally,for food and the fish keeping industry.Last month I down loaded a report that a Japaneses Scientist developed a easy hormone test from arapaima pop that can detect 100% if it's male or female.They said this was a giant step for breeding programs.

i don't think the arapaimas for sale around here are from Amazon ... i am pretty sure they are bred in SE Asia
