Hi All,

I recently set up a new tank, 520 gallons - 96" x 42" x 30" (L x W x H). The tank is set up for South American cichlids (geophagus, uaru, psittacus) and clown loaches (7"+).

I had always thought arowanas basically ate anything and everything but have seen more and more movies of people with arowanas with smaller fish like I have.

The other fish in the tank will be a few stingrays and a fly river turtle.

Any input would be great.

Thanks!

Whether or not the aro will treat smaller fish as food is completely up to itself. Saying that, adding a black should be fine to your com, but make sure its of a big enough size or it'll become stingray food. You should also watch out for the FRT, its a hit or miss with FRT and stingrays, as FRTs have been seen to take chunks out of rays while larger rays have drowned FRTs in the past.

Black aro will do well in your tank. You may need to grow it out a bit first depending on the size of your cichlids. It is hard to say if the aro will eat smaller fish or not. I have two 27" black aros, they pretty much will leave most any smaller fish alone, ranging from serpae and black skirt tetras to silver dollars, angelfish and clown loaches. However if I put gialt danios in the tank, they will hunt them down rather quickly, so ya just won't know until ya try.

Thanks for all the info, just what I was looking for.

Roughly how large of a prey item can say an 18" black arowana eat? What about so a 25-30" one?

My geophagus are currently 4-7" each, stay close to the bottom as do the loaches. The other fish in the tank are quite a bit bigger and much more 'bulk' to them.

nice one day i will probably be getting one unless by then asians become legal in the US, but it sounds like it will work great in that set up.

A 25-30" black can eat, or at least kill while trying to eat a 4-7" fish. An 18" would have a harder time but could possibly kill the same though unlikely. More bite sized fish of 2-3" would be to the 18"ers liking.
