I want a freshwater puffer that gets over 6 inches. I'm interested in mbu, and fakaha, but I don't know enough to make a choice. What would you get?

Personally....

In total disregard to all the BS about tank size... (I find it hypocritical since both get massive yet tank requirements are far off from each other)

I own both and think both are equally personable, the MBU cost more but when it gets of size it also fetches the money unlike a Fahaka which when large nobody wants anymore. Just what I have observed through several LFS and forums I frequent.

I'd go fahaka. Can't comment on the mbu tank size debate, I don't have an mbu. If I was choosing, I'd choose fahaka based on the fact that people tend to agree on their requirements, so setting up for one should be easier. Besides, I kinda think fahaka are prettier anyway :D

We chose an Mbu because being able to keep other fishes in the tank was a priority.

Best of luck with your decision.

I would go with a fahaka too... Although you "might" be able to keep other fish with an MBU, you'd need an adequately large tank and filtration to keep up with all the fish...

Great input so far. I appreciate no one denying me their opinion just because I haven't said what size of tank it would go in. truth is, my big tank has my rays in it so no chance there, and all I have now is a grow out tank that would last till they're six inches. But I'm a legit fish owner. If I decided to get started with one of the puffers, id upgrade to properly house just like I did with my rays. Is not like I'm 13 and the tank I have is all I've got. Spending money in this hobby has become much easier than it was at first.

Had a tank full of all sorts of fish with our Mbu and he has never showed any signs of predation nor aggression toward any.

If you can house it, Mbu all the way. Mbu is my dream fish, but for me, it's not the kind of fish I could grow out and then sell once it out grew the tank. I would need a forever home for it right from the start.

Thats fair enough, but each puffer has its own personality...

For example, most people will say Fahaka's kill any and all tank mates on sight... but mine lives happily with a yellow lab chiclid and a chocolate pleco for the last 2+ years...

Although i've done it, i still wouldn't tell people to replicate my methods just because it worked for me... since i've heard stories of puffers turning at any given time...

Now with MBU, i've heard of MBU's attacking other fish, and even picking on rays, because their eyes look like snails...

So yes, it may work, but at the same time, you always have to consider the fact that any fish can turn aggressive if they want to, and with fish like puffers, their teeth can do a lot of damage which is why i prefer to warn people about it, rather than telling them to go for it without knowing possible consequences...
