Hi all,

I'm currently considering changing out my filtration on my 180g tank. I'm currently running a C-530 Marineland and a Reaction 4 EFU-45. I like the looks of the Eheim with the built in heater and its overall quality seems to be unquestioned. Could I get some information on those that are using this filter and the experiences they've had? I appreciate and all info!

Thank you,

Roger

Howdy,

The Pro 3 series is notorious for poor mech filtration. Search for my name and 2080 and you'll find details (same, just w/o heater). I am running mine on a 70 gal tank, and it can just barely keep up.

The 2260 is much more suitable for your size tank.

When I was looking I never found any good news on the eheims other than the classic series. Alot of people swear by them cuz they have heard of the name, then there would be a post three weeks later saying help my eheim is clogged up.

I ended up going with a rena Xp3 in my case, and I am very happy.

The marinelands are kick ass filters I really liked them.

The Reaction I thought was really nice, especially with the built in uv sterilizer, but I couldnt find any more information on them.

I have a Rena XP3 that I was using in the tank. it doesn't put out enough flow or filtration. Plus, the flow starts slowing down after a day or so. That tells me it really isn't designed for tanks this large.

The Marineland would be fine if it wasn't so noisy. I'd prefer to have something as quiet as the Fluval 305. We have 3 of those in different tanks. I have a total of 7 canister filters running and the Marineland drowns them out easily.

Just thought I'd throw some more info in there....

I'd even take other suggestions on other brands.

Thanks,

Roger

I have a Eheim 2180 on my 90 gallon tank- the flow is probably just adequate for a planted 90g, it certainly will be too small for double that size.
I did think the same way you are thinking- clean up the clutter in the tank, biggest baddest filter. Did not really pan out that way. I have a thread "Eheim pro 3 problems". Briefly- not enough movement, not enough mech filteration, expensive with the media included, the heater got stuck on for some reason and the water went up to 34 C, did not work with my CO2 reactor, cannot get the filter in & out from under tank without breaking my back, the priming mechanism almost broke my thumb, did not prime as easily as I thought after a air lock...... you get the picture.

The thought behind it is good- open only the top, remove the filter floss and close every 2-3 months- easy, quick. Probably will work out that way once I have figured it out completely.

Would I buy this again- likely not. I would go for classic line or Pro 2 if heating is required- that said I have not tried either.
I did have a Ecco which was OK but not great.
I also have a Fluval FX5 and that has good circulation, mech filteration and can be used to change water as well- would likely help you with the large volume changes.
Have you thought about a sump?

I hear you on the biggest baddest idea, so far I haven't figured that one out.....

The Reaction 4 EFU-45 is a decent filter but.....it doesn't have much flow to it. Also the UV is a little weak. I have 3 of those running, one in the 180g in conjunction with the C-530, one in a 60g with a Fluval 305 and one alone in a 70g. The 60g works well, the 70g is ok, I believe the 180g is way to much tank for it. It's pulling water from a very deep tank and having to pump it up fairly high thus reducing the output to about a third of what it should be. It's kind a large to be handling with a 50-70g tank. I've had good luck with the 305's on the smaller tanks.

i have a 180
fx5 all the way
quiet and what FLOW!
i have one fx5 one 2215 and one ac110 on my 180

Happy new 2010.
i have EHEIM 2128 with heater filter on my 100gallon and its ideal.
My head sleep 50 cm(1.6ft)from filter and sleeps very well-its silent.
My heater dont heat att all becouse water is pretty warm 25-27C (good water circulation)
And 2180 on 180gallon its very NORMAL ! 2 aquas through filter in one hour !!!
Just cerefull wash Your 2180 every 90th day.Put in 5L BIO SUBSRAT PRO....
Good luck.

I wonder why your Marineland is so loud -- we have 3 of their canisters, and hear nothing! Perhaps there's something going on -- you could call their customer service number and ask them for ideas as to what could be wrong. They'll send you new parts if you need it.
