Considering Getting Into Discus... Advice?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congratz on starting on your road to discus! I love them. Personally, I recommend a minimum of 55g and even better is 75g. I had a 55g for my group, but when I upgraded to 75g I could tell they were ALOT happier. Also I have juveniles and do a 90% water change 6 days a week. Discus are cichlids. It's usually recommended to start with at least 5 and preferably 7+ to spread the aggression around. There are many different opinions and experiences out there. I would research as much as you can.

Everyone is scaring u with the 50% 60% 90% water change daily... u only need to do that if ur buying small ones like 2" and want to grow them fast and plump reason for that is Cuz to grow them fast and plump u will be maybe feeding them 6-10 times a day with different food and with a beefheart mix and beef heart dirty the water.. I've personally kept 18 adult discus all 6" plus in a 135 gallon tank with driftwood and live plants and I hardly do water change just refill water Cuz of evaporation main thing is to have good filtration system I personally like using the Marineland bio wheel I used 2 emperor 400 on the 135 gallon

But I would suggest at least starting with a 75 gallon tank now if u want to use a 20 gallon as a grow out tank for 8 small discus it's ok and domestic discus can live in regular ph tap water of 7-7.6 water temp can be anywhere from 80-88 higher temp harder for discus to get disease I keep my tanks at 84
