Considering Removing All Decorations - Just Looking For Opinions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When you say the way it is are you saying how it was before I made the changes or now that I have?

How it was. The very first pic.

Me I like my bogwood. I have an 85 with 2 larg pieces that even my 10 inch L-25 can't move and she is strong. I have black gravel and the bogwood in the center your tank looks like something is missing to me. Also I actually like the look of string algae on the bogwood but to each his own.

So you liked it better with all the decor?

Yes, i liked the previous setup. It has more contrast and appealing to look at. But anyways, your reason for removing the decors was to make it easier to clean the tank and provide more swimming space right? Agree with other posts about the driftwood. IMO, a right sized DW will add more character to your tank with or without the boulder.

Well would try to address the algae issue as well.

You are saying you would try to address the algae issue as well. Right?...

Thanks for all the opinions and suggestions guys. I really would like maybe something really large to use as a center piece instead of the rock. Wish I had a heavy, heavy piece of driftwood that I could bottom left corner to back right corner lay in there without a bunch of smaller branches coming off it. I like the fat, hunky, stump ones. I was actually thinking about these ceramic pieces I saw. They are pretty much the regular ones you would see in the lfs. They are super heavy, designed to sit on the bottom, and sort of look like large driftwood roots coming out of the ground, and have like a greenish vine wrapped around them. I just looked to try and find it but I couldn't. Anyhow, I think it would provide decent hiding spots between the roots for my CK when he's added, and look better than the rock.

Maybe two of them in there and a few rocks on the sand? For now, I do like the fact that I can get the tank really clean without having to go around decorations. Like, tomorrow I'm going to do another wc (just a small one) just so I can get the rest of the waste I couldn't get during the first wc. Just thinking about all the built up waste that was under the rocks and the algae behind the plants makes me happy I "gutted" the tank.

I liked the original setup. I get why you changed it, but still... it looked really good.
the problem with the rockpiles... I probably would have tried sticking an aquarium pump in the back pile to make some water flow to prevent waste accumulation and removed the front.
the rock pile, wood, and trailing plant (to me) gave it a look of being a riverbank.

Funny you say that because I was looking for the river theme. Anyhow, the aerator underneath the rock pile is a really great idea. I'm digging the openness the tank has now though.

Here is what I ended up doing today. The sump intake was blowing so hard it was blowing threw the sand down to the bottom of the tank, so I placed one of the large rocks right where it was blowing so the sand is no longer blown around, moved another one to the right so there is one on each side, and placed a few f the smaller rocks around them. It's simple but boy was it easy to clean the substrate today. (sorry for the poor picture quality)

I love the original look.. shoulda just removed the big rocks in the middle..

As far as the brown on the plants.. I would recommend investing in a fish called "silver flying fox" they clean my plants of the brown algea.
