OK today I started the construction of my sump. it is 48"L X 24"D X 24"T (outside Dimentions) it is made of 3/4" good one side Plywood. I chose this size out of simplicity and I figure go big or go home. the "box took 1 sheet of plywood and left me with 2 24"X 1" excess. FIrst I cut the Sheet into the 5 pieces 3at 48"X24" 2 at 24X 22 1/2" then I used Silicone on all the Joints and 1-1/2" Screws spaced at 4" apart once screwed together I ran a second bead of Silicone along the inside edges. and now I Have to stop for the night I dont need to annoy my neighbors with sawing and drilling at 10 PM.

I am deliberating which method I want to use to seal it all up.....

I just read through a project for a tank By ARL. He used PVC and thought it would be fun to try. I am gonna scope out some and see the cost. the sump will have a sock for a prefilter I am gonna try starting at 25 micron. the socks we have at work are 3' long and 6" across so should be good. they are $5 each I think so even if I have to replace monthly its cheep. from the Sock it will be at the bottom of the tank from here it will rise over an overflow and onto a diffuser then across a batting Prefilter. then I was thinking to use Scouring Pads next followed by Pot Scrubbies. as I have almost a full case of Carbon and a full Case of Biomax for my AC 110 I figured I would add these into the mix as well. this will all be on light diffusers the bottom one being held off the bottom of the sump about 1" from here it will go under the second barrier into the pump area of the tank. any thoughts or suggestions Lay them on me I will try to BS my way through it. this is my first Sump and noone I know has ever had one so everything I am trying I got from MFK so critiques here are taken with open ears and a hammer (kidding on the hammer)

on a second note I figured I would build this sump out of wood so I get the opportunity to try building a tank with wood before I go for it of a full scale when I go for a 500G tank. that tank will have 4 windows in it so it will have 4X the areas to screw up on so if I at least have the tank sealing part done when I have to do it again but with glass the tank will be fine and just have to worry about windows. MFK is resposible for reigniting my addiction to fish just now I might do it right and spend money on going bigger as apposed to replacing dieing fish thankyou MFK

how many Scrubbies should I have in a sump this size?

As many as you can stuff in there :D if this is going to be for next 500g build. BB will spread thru out the scrubbies abet in a smaller number, but will be ready when the upgrade comes along.

ok plans got set back a bit My dad has been gone on his Honeymoon and was supposed to be gone for 3-4 weeks. he said I could use his shop so when I went to pick up my AquariumI put it in his shop as I wanted to seal it up and make sure it didnt leak before I moved it into my house. Also on the to do list was to build a new stand for it as the one under it doesnt go with the house at all. Well guess who came back to town 2 weeks Early. Ding Ding Ding you guessed it the old Man. he needs the space back in his shop and I have a roughly 600LB Aquarium sitting in the middle of the floor. no stand to move it to and a barely started sump. mando I wish I had a shop of my own... so I am waiting on calls to be returned to find some help to move this thing again and knowing before long I will have to move it again. I am gonna lose all my friends before I even start construction of the 500G. well off I go to make some more phone calls. wish me luck!!!

OK I have a Question. my sump is made of 3/4" Plywood. the tank will sit on top of the sump with 2X4's running across its top. from the top of the 2X4's I want there to be a 1ft gap between the top of the sump and the bottom of the tank. the old stand was 3/4" Particle board and mine is 3/4" Plywoodwill it be strong enough to hold the tank? I figured it will but I better get a second opinion in case I need to add some more structure to the sump to support it

Your on the right track here.

Glad to see your Dad made an honest kid out of you (him getting married).

Came home early from the Honeymoon huh? OOooooo not good. :(

Sorry, I can't seem to find what size tank is going on top.

I think you need extra bracing to support a tank, basically build a frame/stand around the sump.

I test filled the tank Late last night and all that leaked where the Valves on the fittings I shoved in the Bulkheads. other than that the tank is great now I just need to finish the sump and hope like hell it doesnt leak and figure out whats left on the sump. I figured I'd try to get about a500GPH pump. thaughts?
