i work in healthcare-if your child keeps this up for more than 2-3 days you need to get them to a doctor. It could either be a sinus infection (those can take weeks to go away.. use something like Mucinex to dry the stuff up and i use a nose spray out of warm water and a little table salt-it burns a little but kills the bacteria and dries up your sinus cavity.. ).
but, it could also be a virus-the flu season is here now.. and god knows how many ppl dont wash their hands.. just a tip for everyone here before you even touch your face ALWAYS wash your hands. you would be amazed at what is on a doorknob or any object that hands touch (we call those "fomites" or germ carriers).
If you are running a fever you are contagious. that goes for anyone-stay at home, dont spread the virus to coworkers because youll just keep spreading it around and around--youll keep getting it..
