After doing lots of research, it appears that container ponds are becoming very popular, and certainly more creative. People are using pots, sinks, troughs and the popular barrel. And I am thinking about setting one of these up next year in early spring. But what better time to buy a nice container, than during winter when no one buys anything for the garden so I am hoping they will be cheaper.

I was thinking about a big ceramic plant pot, one of them huge ones. And I just wanted to know if any members have done this in the past or have one set up? Would love to see some pictures and hear some advice.

Ah mines for the parents patio, doesn’t look like the big pond idea is going through at the moment so this is a branch to play with. So humidity is not a problem.
I was going to put a dwarf water Lilly, some water lettuce and something else very visable from the surface. And then just either some sticklebacks (native to round here) or a sole goldfish.
What about you?

the only thing with ceramic is it absorbs water and it will loose alot of water through evaporation through the pot. I would try plastic or an old whiskey barrel. Although most people put liners in whiskey barrels as well.http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=5355

I like thaat whickey barrel look.......very nice......how may gallons do you think it is..........looked bigger than a standard 55 gal drum!!:)

I'm not sure, but I have seen them from around 10 - 50 gallons for the wood ones. The larger ones are harder to find. Home depot and lowes usually has a couple of sizes but they are usually cheap and flimsy. I have seen the authentic jack daniels ones for sale but they are expensive. I would try to find a local winery or something and see if they get rid of any old ones.

If it is a true whiskey or wine barrel it will hold fluid, however it will leech alot of nogoods out like whiskey and if it is a store bought one they are cheaply made and not made to hold water, but dirt for plants. So, yes, either way you should use a liner with a wood barrel. You can buy liner pieces as long as you want in the garden center at lowes or home depot also. Its hard to find so you might have to ask where it is. The liner they sell I would not use on a large pond but for a barrel or something of sorts its fine.

I was interested in the barrels myself, I have seen them come with a hard plastic liner that fits right inside an almost "faux" looking barrel, but it has the same look and appears to work just fine,
