I was interested in the barrels myself, I have seen them come with a hard plastic liner that fits right inside an almost "faux" looking barrel, but it has the same look and appears to work just fine,

filtration???? a large cannister should work right???:)

I bet that would really do the trick! Thats what I kinda had in mind myself ! :headbang2

I love the little barrel set Justin, wish I could find them down my end. And no doubt if I did they would be ultra expensive. Just like barrels – they are very hard to come by and when you do find some they are £50 just for the half barrels!

I do have a fairly large plastic pot/planter. It is two foot high and two foot wide at the very widest point. However it has some big drainage holes at the bottom. Anyone have any suggestions about how I close these holes up?

If you put a liner in it, just silicone to fill it up, may even work without a liner but I would cover an inch more all around the hole for strength. Or cut a plastic plug and solvent weld / melt it in place.

Have you checked into plastic drums, 55g ones and smaller are used for foods and concentrates (applejuice etc.). Even large beer kegs if you can find one damaged but might be pricey.

Or, buy the liner and make / build your own around it with metal / block or cement.

Keep us posted.

I was going to try and avoid using liner if i was going to use the plastic planter pot.
Any special kind of silicone, and if i put it on real thick it may hold water without a liner?

I wanted to avoid those plastic drums and container, they look rather ugly. My pot i have is moulded nicely on the outside. So looks nice on the patio.

If I can find a local barrel fairly priced I will jump at it. And I don’t intend to do this till spring so I have plenty of time to look. But for the time being, back to the silicone..

Here it's GE silicone 1, check the label to make sure it doesn't have an anti-bacterial agent or mold preventitive etc.

If there is room (bottm of the pot is indented or raised) you can smear the silicone 1/2" around the edge of the hole and put a plastic patch over the silicone on the bottom for extra strength. (inside too if you can).

After it's dried for a week (more if you put a patch on both sides), wash it out with a mild dish soap and water, rinse several times then fill with water and age it for a couple of weeks. (not really necessary but I like to be safe)

I understand about ugly barrels, I have two I keep meaning to cover with wood to look more like a barrel, just can't seem to get to it :grinno: .

Hope you can find something you like, then you'll have two ! :headbang2

If I can be of any help let me know.

Happy New Year,

Dr Joe

Excellent. If I don’t come across something nice like a nice big planter pot or barrel, I’ll have a little ‘how I did it’ topic setup following your tips. The pot is indented at the bottom by 2cm, I recon if I go ahead I’ll add plastic bits over the silicon on the bottom and top.

Thanks again for your help Dr Joe, happy new year to you too. During the whole of 2006 you have been extremely helpful, I look forward to your help in 2007 ;)

After doing lots of research, it appears that container ponds are becoming very popular, and certainly more creative. People are using pots, sinks, troughs and the popular barrel. And I am thinking about setting one of these up next year in early spring. But what better time to buy a nice container, than during winter when no one buys anything for the garden so I am hoping they will be cheaper.

I was thinking about a big ceramic plant pot, one of them huge ones. And I just wanted to know if any members have done this in the past or have one set up? Would love to see some pictures and hear some advice.

I used a huge plastic flower pot. I sealed the drainage holes with aquarium selent. I put feeder goldies in it. In the end the goldies just died and than algae started to grow and some type of water bugs. They looked like wiggly worms. Gross. I had sand on the bottom and live plants harvested from the lake we live on.

Hope you had a good new year Dr Joe, still have not got round to getting that silicone/aquarium sealant. But it will give me an excuse to escape to the fish shop next week.

sharpy that is exactly the kind of setup i am after. Instead of dumping a number of goldies in there, i was going to just pop one in there for mosquito patrol. What were the dimensions and volume of the pot? I would be more than grateful and happy for some pictures...
