How can I control that wretched green slime algae. It grows on my sand and looks terrible.

I know it's not really a algae but I bacterium. I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

I've found that the only way to completely eradicate Cyanobacteria is to take your system apart, bleach/clean all components and start over. I've never had a problem with cyano in my tanks, but I've had several clients with cyano issues who tried to use antibiotic/antibacterial treatments and those treatments were ineffective and created resistant strains of an already nearly unkillable organism.
Blacking out the system can work in some less advanced cases, but usually a good clean is a sure fire way to make sure it stays dead.

How bad is it? If not too bad, clean out the filters, on separate occasions, and then di larger water changes and make sure un-eaten food is taken out right away and it should clear up?

At least that helped in my case...

Okay well crazy thing about this is I've never ever had it. I completely took down my tank. Redid it, took out the gravel and added sand, set it back up and let it cycle then added pbass. When I took it down I completely cleaned it. So it seems as tho completely cleaning it has caused the cyano to grow.

This isnt an algae bloom but I will admit I leave the lights on quite a bit.

This will help the cyano grow much faster. Also, the color spectrum of the bulb is important in combating the bacteria as cyano grows best using odd ends of the spectrum; I believe somewhere around the 3000-4500K range
