Conversion of my 75gal fresh tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You will be ok without a skimmer if you have enough mechanical filtration with the canisters. Just keep an eye on things.
I would only get away from tap water if you have algae issues. Sometimes it can be high in nitrate and phosphate. If yours isn't, there is no real 'need' to get the RO unit.

yeah im not 100% sure on phos but i know nitrates are 0

Any thing is possible. Before i new any better in this hobbie about 10 years ago. I had a 75 salt with a 10 inch dog face puffer that i grew in there from 3 inches to the ten inch end size. With one ac110 with just two sponges in the filter. And that was it for filtration. No skimmer diddnt even know what that was then.

im on the same boat, im torn between tearing down my FW and turning it into a SW and keeping my FW up and running, and its funny, its almost like you read my mind when you were talking about how the FW pales in comparison to SW tanks. i think you should go for it and switch to SW, you will forget all about FW at least its what im hoping lol

well guys i appreciate the input but for now im keeping the freshwater tank running for a few main reasons:

1) i will probably be moving next summer, and a FW tank is much easier to relocate than a SW
2) I can now use the money I save from not switching the tank over to put in to my other hobby of fishing and now am going deep sea fishing twice in the next 2 weeks
3) It's financially responsible as it really is a lot of money because I know myself and I know that I would take that thing from FOWLR to full blown reef in under 6 months
4) I really would miss my freshwater fish deep down :)

- so once again guys I really appreciate all the input and someday I will in fact have a large SW set up, but until then I am going to enjoy my low work 75 gallon and my little 20 gallon reef :)

I can agree 100% with that, it's truly a great commitment to switch from FW to SW but sometimes it's worth it, I know that in the next few day I will know for sure if I'm going to take the jump. I only started my aquarium a month ago so I'm not quite attached just yet but I have 25 small tropical fish so it's gonna be hard selling them all.
