You also indicated you had a canister filter right? What I've been told is that if you decide to use it in a saltwater setup, you'll have to clean it out more often, as even minimal nitrates can lead to lots of undesirable algae. Thus, there are some people who sugguest against it.
I personally ran a FOWLR tank in the past with just live rock and a skimmer. Along with regular water changes, the system should fine. You can also add an extra powerhead to ensure there are no dead spots.
As for skimmer - I used the Remora AquaC, which is a great HOB skimmer. I've also heard good things about the CPR Bakpak.
If you are putting in 30-40 lbs of live rock, as you indicated in your 30 gal tank, there should be more than adequate bio filtration, as long as you don't over stock.
Else - it is very exciting starting a new SW tank. All the advice the other members have shared are excellent.
