Sad people do this to morays. They are not freshwater creatures.

You are killing this eel.

x2 this may work short term.. but the simple fact is SW fish belong in SW and FW fish belong in FW forceing either to convert to the other results in a slow painful death of the animal. SW fish require the salt to properly function, FW fish require the lack of salt to properly function. iir it will slowly shut down either or's kidneys as a result. most eels forced fw or sw will eventually simply stop eating as their bodies shut-down.. and when this happens it is to late to fix it. which is why many G- tiles will eventually stop eating in a FW tank. It may only be a matter of weeks.. or a few years.. but it's not a question of If, but when.

It's true many eels will swim into river systems in the wild.. but they can also regulate their salt levels by swimming back into saltier waters. being unable to do this in captivity is why it doesn't work. some of these species have become land-locked and evolved into FW fish.. but the animals must be collected from one of these habitates to be bale to live a full healthy life in a FW environment. evolution does not happen over-night.

These eels briefly venture into brackish water estuaries and areas, they don't live in full freshwater.

Also to consider, I've worked in the LFS trade for 10 years and never seen a Fimbriatus in freshwater...it's a nice looking eel, I'm sure if it was possible people would be doing it, as it's far better looking than the normal "FW" morays.

this is the pic that got me interested in the idea in the first place.

I PMed fugupuff about this. Hopefully he'll have time to reply.

He has successfully acclimated a saltwater bumblebee grouper into freshwater.

It's has thrived and grown a lot in the condition he provided for it.

Any chance you guys have more than one and willing to ship?
tropical fish world in sumner had a fimbriated eel a couple weeks ago last time i was there.

as far as converting them, they CANNOT live in fw. shure you could drop em in fw long enough to snap some pics but thats it. also if that eel lived in that tank, then all those other fish would be eel food, fimby's are nt exactly nice.

I'd rather not say too much on this subject. There are people who believe that western medicine is the only way to go. There are people who believe in everything they've learned from text books and what other people say.

Science changes constantly, most people on here that offer opinions are expressing what they've read on text book or what other people tell them, not many can speak from first hand experiences. Over the years, I've learned to keep my mouth shut and keep my opinions to myself. I'm not sure how hybrids of stingrays are more accetable than flowerhorns, or tatooed fish are worse than designer dogs bred for their dwarf sizes.

Not sure why "veal" is more acceptable than people who eat dolphins or whales, or dogs.

Not sure why keeping a "secondary salt water fish" such as morays, groupers or breams in brackish water is worse than keeping any fish in a glass box out of their natural habitat.

ummm well said... but this is a forum. everyone on mfk knows that everyone has... two nostrils, and sometimes one turns out to be full of crap.
we like to share and we like opinions here, thats how we all learn.

to anyone interested i may actually try this, unless someone can give me a definitive answer. thanks for all opinions :)
