I'm looking for fish to breed for feeders for my other tanks. I've found quite a bit of info on guppies and such, but am having a hard time finding info on Convicts. I know that they grow slowly. But how slowly? How many pairs can I put in a 90 for breeding? Do I need anything for the fry to hid in, what kind of set up do I need? Tank temp?

Any information would help.

Convicts are easy to breed. Just put a male and female in tank and you should get babies. They should grow pretty fast. Depends on what your feeding them and how big the tank is. I mean they won't grow in a 10 gallon. Usualy the parants are pretty protective but you can give the fry something to hide in if you wanted to. Temps around 78 degrees F work for mine.
Give them a clay pot on its side or some kind of cave. You really don't need such a large tank, but you could get several pairs in 90 gallon.

What is the footprint of the 90 g tank? I divided a 55g tank and had two pairs of convicts. You may be able to get three pair in your 90.

I have convict fry swimmin' around my turtle tub. I ,by all means, did not intend to do this, it just happened. The three convicts that survived the turtles must have found there new home nice and cozy.

the 90 footprint is 4'X48". would it be benificial to have the pairs separtated?

everything that I'm reading about sexing these guys says that you won't know until their older their sex. how do I tell at the LFS males from females?

Even at the tiny size the LFS sell them at you can still sex them. Females will normally have the orange color on them even when very young. Just pick ones with orange and few that have virtually no color at all.

I notice in your sig you have snail problems...I have read alot of information that states convicts actually eat snails.

i would devide the tank for the best result that way they can establish more teritories in a smaller space

be carefull because bigger fry will kill smaller fry if mixed together in a grow out tank i had one pink convict baby kill a whole tank of geophagus because i missed it when i emptied the tank before adding the geo

i sepperate the fry out after they are free swimming and the parrents lay eggs every month it takes about 4-5 months at at least 70 degrees to grow the babies to a good 1 inch size for feeding and they need atleast a half gallon apeice to reach this size quickly. i feed them new life spectra grow food wich is tiny after they are big enough to eat it. i use rubbermaid containers to do this so with at least 100 fry each month that is alot of space so it depends on how many feeders you need each month

one pair is all i have because they provide plenty of babies the most space is used by growing the babies

so just one pair gives you about 100 a month. what have you found to be the best way to catch the fry to transfer them to the rubbermaids. what size rubbermaid do you use. my fish go though about 100 small feeders once a week, and they're still growing! thanks for the info.
