im not new to fishkeeping,i can see that with firemouths but these are black convict cichlids! only the females have orange/reddish bellies! And all of them were female when i had them. they were in my tank for like 7 months if i had a male (all black)and female pair they would have paired up along time ago. I know some saltwater fish and south american frogs can do this (change sex if there in a one sex environment) but i wanted to know if this has happened to any one here?

Not true. We once had a thread about male convicts with orange on their sides and there were several members who had them (and posted pics to prove it).

He beat me to it but males with color are pretty common. One of my lfs gurs told me that it was usually the less dominant/assertive males that had this and that is probably why it took so long for it to bread with the females. Give us some pics though.

this sounds like what happened. cause he had orange on his belly but not as much as the others the last few weeks the orange fadded out to a few scales. sorry i dont have any pics of him right now when he died my girl flushed him. i might have some older pics though. him maybe it was one of those metrosexual convicts lol

thanks for the info guys

It wasn't a ridiculous conclusion though. Theres not much of a way you would have known that males could have color. Usually it is just on a couple of scales.

ive seen male convicts with orange on there sides.... wouldn't surprise me if that was what happend
