convict cichlid compatibility

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hang on my friend just offered me a red devil at about 10 - 15 cm. he says that it lives with his red zebra in a 3 ft tank. he needs to get rid of it because he has too much tanks to maintain. would this work in my 55 gallon with convicts and jewels?

NO!! The red devil will more than likely slaughter everything in your tank. 10-15 cm is roughly 5-6 inches correct?

Bad idea. Red devil will out grow and then kill everything.

Try giant danios. They're pretty freaking fast and stay at the surface.

Adding the RD is pretty much asking for trouble. If the tank was bigger you could give it a try. But he is probably going to want that complete tank for himself.

Also a 55 gallon is not big enough for an RD, even if it is just the RD by himself without other tankmates.

Good shout on the Tiger Barbs, I have 7 in with my single male con in a 55, they get on fine; sometimes he goes nuts and chases them at feeding time, but nothing they can't handle :)

As others have stated - stay away from the red devil - it will evetually be the only fish in the tank.

Dither fish that I have had very good success in my SA/CA cichlid tank, a couple of which have already been mentioned, are tiger barbs, giant danios and buenos aires tetras. I would recommend a group of at least 6-8 of these (which ever fish you choose).

Stick with the 6 tiger barbs. They will add movement & are pretty dang tough for their size. I "had" 6 in with a jaguar cich for the better part of 4 months if that tells you about their resilience.

Heres an idea… Get a Stripped Talking catfish (Platydoras costatus).. They eat all the excess fry in your tank - a form of birth control for prolific cichlid species. They're armour plated and very strong and go like tanks deep into cichlid nesting sights eating the fry. I had one with my Flowerhorn breeding pair years ago (the bad old days of keeping FHs). This catfish would barge its way in and vacuum up the fry as soon as nightfall came and the Flowerhorns hardly made and scratch on this tough little catfish.
