Convict cichlid pair - 15 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’d either do something more manageable like rams, or if you don’t mind African cichlids you could fill it with shells and get a little colony of shelldwellers.
Have kept multis in the past, looking for something different now.
Kribs are fun, they are like mini convicts in behavior. Not crazy, but out for blood when they breed.
Currently considering apistos or kribs because of their personality :).

I have about 20 kribs, used to be even more. They are very fun to have. All you need is a pair, and then they breed like convicts. The pairs don’t beat up on each other too much though. You could probably get a pair with some cories.

if you kept the convicts in the 15 gallon, did you plan on upgrading the tank? I actually kept a pair in a 10 gallon for 4-6 months this last spring-summer but I was feeding lightly and doing 60% waterchanges every 3 days. Got them out of there when the male was pushing 3 inches and they are now in a 40 breeder and he is now pushing 4 inches. if this is temporarily and you keep the waterquality in check they shouldn't be stunted whatsoever.

Rainbow cichlid pair could work. They are significantly smaller than convicts and much more peaceful.

eh I believe they will also eventually get 5-6 inches like convicts. With this tank size you could only keep fish that can get too that size range temporarily and how long depends on the size of the fish and how manageable the water quality is.

I did have plans on moving them onto a 33 gallon (24" 18" 18" ),had to take in a friends Vieja synspilum in and had to move things around to make space for him and ended putting my 5.5" flowerhorn in the 33 gallon which was meant for the convict pair I might have to keep them in there for about 7 months until my friend moves and he can pick up his synspilum.

how big our the cons now?

Should be good for a while, they are slow growers. The main concern is agression. You could try dividing the tank if it gets bad though.
