Convict cichlid sexual maturity

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lol btw don't be surprised if ya suddenly are down to 1 male and 1 female convict as they will probably kill the other 2 males. These lil fish are pound for pound some of the most aggressive fish out there. Mine used to bully my 14in giant gourami along with a bunch of other fish all ranging from 4-14in each. These 1-3in fish kept roughly 90% of the tank to themselves. Eventually got rid of all the convicts and only kept my original male who is now 5in long. His name is lokir btw lol. 10 points to anyone who guesses what game his name is from.

UPDATE

It’s been 3 days since she laid the eggs, they haven’t hatched but she’s still defending and fanning the eggs. Hopefully they hatch tonight and tomorrow I’ll wake up to some wigglers?

Convicts are baby making machines! ? And yes, despite being so common, they are a favorite of mine. I'll never forget when I once threw some fry into my 150 as feeders for the large cichlids that were in there (oscar and synspillum) . I didn't see them for weeks and figured they all got eaten. But lo and behold, one day I see a tiny convict barely an inch long swimming amongst the monsters with no fear at all like he owned the place. Somehow he evaded getting eaten and he was accepted into the tank. I had him for years and he grew into quite the beast. ?

My platinum HRP juvies started trying to spawn in the growout tank at barely an inch long.

Interesting, I have my hand in the tank all the time and they've never come near it - always been rather skittish. But I'm wondering if I'm going to get another mated pair (along with my Texas and Convict pairing) - and I think those babies, when they get a bit larger, will actually show marking/traits of BOTH parents, which would be really cool.
