Convict Conundrum

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think everyone established that there is a threesome and theres a lone man out. What they are suggesting is you remove the less dominant/big female and place her in with the beaten up male, so put in a tank divider and have a pair on either side. They will probably pair up, then youll be able to remove the divider after they have established a partnership.

I suppose I could try that, although the smaller female seems just as interested in chasing him away and hasnt even laid her eggs yet. Other problem is she's probably going to have laid her eggs before I can construct a divider since everything is closed tomorrow for thanksgiving. The eggs will be fertilized by the other male and that will pose other problems. Maybe if she hasnt laid eggs by tuesday I can give it a go. Otherwise, I guess I could wait a week or two until all of the fry are free swimming in the feeder tank and divide the 55 gal then hoping the 2nd male will make it that long. I think he'll be fine in the short term, I was more concerned for the long term when the plants and rocks wont hide him so well.

Yeah I suppose it wouldnt hurt to give it a go :)

My convicts were just as fickle, I had a male, couldnt get a female for ages so when I finally got one he just wanted to kill her for being in his territory. So I took him out and put him in with my RD. Fixed him right up :ROFL:Netted him back out and put him back in the con tank. He played nicely and I had fry 2 weeks later :grinno:

As expected the 2nd female had laid eggs by the time I fed them in the morning. The male is attentively going between both nests and watching the eggs and what are now wigglers of the other female. The off male seems to be getting a break with all this egg action so maybe he will be alright until we can try the divider although if one male is enough I almost dont see the reason to have another potential wife beater. So I may still just put him up or maybe suck it up and take him back to the lfs. I only dont want to do that because I just returned some threadfin rainbows to them and I dont want them thinking I buy and return fish all the time :p.

hello? flush the fish? let it go in a river?

you're obviously on the internet. . . .try ebay or aquabid for pick-up only, craigslist, put an ad in the mfk classifieds, local fish stores, fish clubs, and free local newspapers. as far as not wanting to return the male to the store, just tell them the truth - the fish are fighting and he's the odd man out. otherwise, go to a different store.
