Convict in pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
texas cichlid would be the best choice for the climate. but for fishing? peacock bass and rainbow bass (dovii)!!!! I would at least throw a couple in there.

convicts don't get big enough to fish. they would make good bait for the dovii, though!!

Convicts are actually loads of fun on ultralight tackle. Put up a good fight. They also make good peacock bass bait.

In Hawaii when the water was in the mid to low 60's most of the tropical fish would go dormant but they make it through the winter...

is that a convict? why does it have yellow

If you got a 1/4 acre pond, you can put some heat in it!!! I would put ALL the parachromis, RDs, midas, peacock bass, oscars, dempseys, cons....

I would charge admission. catch and release only..

Its not my pond, but i get free admission anyway:headbang2:headbang2

I'd have to put a pacu and a couple of catfish in there, too.

Invite the "river monsters" guy over for a couple of beers!!

speaking of catfish can i add a pangasius? and will pacu survive so cal winter?

from what I remember, it doesn't get too much colder than 50* in socal. put some pond heaters in there, and I bet you'd be fine. not sure about panguasius, but I don't see why not. I'd probably just do a rtc and couple of tsns

@sabfan where can one get texas cichlid. im not sure if he checked or not. but he build the pond so why cant he stock the pond as he wishes?

Texas cichlids are not uncommon, maybe can be found at your LFS

as to legality, you didn't say he built the pond, you said he had a pond . . . granted, you said it was private, but some states/locales still won't let you put non-native or invasive fish into local waters . . .

I suggested he check the legality to make sure he can stock the pond as he wishes, because if it turns out he can't, the fines can be steep

ignorance is bliss, but it's no excuse :irked:
