Convict male not interested in breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay. How about this then. It doesn't have an orange belly. Ergo it's a male.

Coz hey guess what. That's how you can reliably sex Convicts. :O Be it striped or calico or pink. :O Omg mind-blown.

No. Especially so for many color morphs. Your "dude" just might be a chick.

I'm sorry but I've never seen a female with absolutely no orange throughout her life. Sure she may lose much of it when she's stressed, but on the same token a black blotch will go lighter when a Green Texas is stressed too, or stuff like that. But regardless of color morph (this is Convicts we're talking about), the orange belly will be present on females. Google '(fe)male [insert-morph-here] convict' and you'll see what I'm talking about.

You can be an ass all you want, I was just trying to help....if you cant breed Convicts maybe its the person breeding them, good luck.

Hey guys, its a male, I have bred convicts for years (not a huge accomplishment i know) and know what to look for when sexing, no orange belly, his breeding tube is narrow(not all the way down but it sticks out sometimes) and he is pushing 4 inches plus. I also bought it as a sexed male from Rapps, who said it was part of another pair but his female died . Tank size is 29 gallons, water temp 80. Funny thing is this current clutch of eggs is not fertilized but it seems instinct has kicked in and the male is currently guarding them with the female. Im guessing he will get it right the next time.

Ill give it more time, and if he still has no interest ill try another female.

Not saying your wrong, but every pair I have ever picked out and bred (whether pink or standard) the female had an orange belly and the male did not (for A. nigrofasciatus).

If you have any pictures of males with orange bellies and females without I would be interested in seeing them.

Again who knows though since these fish are unfortunately super hybridized now a days, but I'm still confident in the orange belly and sexing.

Update, looks like 15 or so of the eggs managed too make it into wigglers, I have no idea how though. Hopefully I will get a better spawn next time.
