no, a true convict male will not have any orange/red scales on his sides. HRP males may have some orange or red but ime this tends to disappear with age.

Males are typically much larger than the females and the females generally have an orange-red belly with a bluish black dorsal fin.

In black con's only the females show the orange patch on their lower flanks and belly. As they grow the size difference is quite noticable, and the males develop a nuchal hump.

Rule of thumb: Males are big and bulky , females are small and pretty. Just like people.
