Convict pair not breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think it really matters with convicts. My pair lives in a 78 degree tank and they breed none stop, but that is just my pair. Hope it helps

Patience is the key. I have a pink con pair (i say pair loosely, as they haven't yet bred properly) they go through the motions. Constant displaying, digging and being aggressive. However i am unsure if they have even laid eggs yet. The females ovipositor is always hanging, so i figure one of mine may be infertile and they keep eating the eggs. Your pair may have spawned several times but one of your pair may be infertile. Sounds a bit stupid but it may be a possibilty. Keep an eye on them and ensure the pot is facing the front so you can see if they lay eggs. Just a thought.

Its not that the temperature being high is whats triggering the breeding. i dont think thats what people are saying. its the idea that the reason water changes induce spawning its because it mimics the rain season becuase the rain cools the water a bit. so if ur tap is at 75degrees let say and ur tank is at 75 it wont have the same cooling effect as if u crank ur heater up a bit that way ur water changes will be colder by a few degrees.
To the op. once they start enjoy the ride cause theyre aquatic rabbits. :) dont worry ur almost there. i know how it feels ur so close u got a pair theyre doing the dance and nothing. one day youll wake up to eggs like the post about the firemouths.

I was going to mention the rainy season imitation but woofy beat me to it.

Fishe, check out my last thread. Long story short: My convicts just spawned after waiting a month. Even with pristine water conditions and dropping off of water temperature, it comes down to the individual fish. The first attempt to spawn ended in faiilure after 3 weeks of mutual courting when the female killed the male. This second successful spawn took a little longer in terms of courting, but in their own time, the convicts chose a piece of slate and few day days later I have 100 fry. Just be patient and keep up the good diet and water changes.
