Convict question. Male or Female?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is also possible that you have 2 females and they have paired up. Wait to see if you have eggs. You will know soon enough. They will turn white and disappear (eaten) if they are unfertilized, which would be another indicator that you have 2 females. I have also heard of rare occations when males have orange on their bellies, in which case you will have about 100 fry about 3 days after eggs are laid.

I'll do some more observation when the lights comes on at 10am my time. Getting a closer picture is pretty hard as it stays in in or directly above its pit constantly but I'll see what I can do. I really like this one though its the best looking of the bunch.

Speaking of appearances, do they have any bearing on mating and forming of pairs such as relative size to the other Convicts, color definition etc?

as far as forming pairs go..
my old female had fry with a 1-1/2" male within a week of adding him to the tank lol.
then she ate his ass.

good luck

Just took this, only camera I have right now is my camera phone but I think this one shows the Convict better.

I don't know about you but I seem some red on that belly.

:iagree: I definetly see some red/orange on its belly........I say it's definetly a female......

If it has color on the belly it is Female, it looks like a pretty nice one too, hope the mystery is solved soon and you get some babies out of it!
