Convict question.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never really understood the reason for using fish to cycle a tank, it takes to long. Just use things such as pre used filter media/filters, pre used ornaments, tranfer some pre used water etc. Anything that"s already carrying the necessary bacteria is so much easier and much more effective.

To answer your question. Yes, it could be used for the cycle. But the time period of the cycle would be................. To freaking long!

Buy some of seachems stablility.. I did this as a precaution with a 55 and it was cycled already with the filters I threw on it.. but still I used "Stability" and had no worries :) It boasts a 7 day cycle for a Brand new tank :) And you can add fish right away.. :)

Since you'll be setting up a 10g, you could easily and quickly cycle that tank with some material in your other tanks. For ex. take the dirty, un-vacuumed gravel from your existing tanks and use it to line your 10. Then take some of your bio material in existing filters and use it in your 10g's filter. Lastly, fill the 10g with water from your existing tanks.

You may now put the Convict in!

He's right dont do a cycle with the convict. This will instanly cycle your tank.

I agree on the filter thing, however put a convict or two in anyway since it's only a 10 gallon tank and much harder to cycle than a larger tank.
