convict question

in one of my two 55 gallon tanks with 2 convicts (one 4 incher and another thats about 2 1/2) why would the larger convict be digging a hole one peice at a time does this mean she is preparing to lay eggs and war will be occuring in my tank?
ive never seen this behavior she is taking one peice of gravel at a time and placing it outside the hole.

any ideas helpful suggestions would be great i will put the convicts into a smaller 10 gallon tank if u think any of his tankmats would be in trouble.
-one african "bumble bee cichlid" (stupid pet stores just make up their own nicknames some times i think. he is about the size of the large convict.)
-3 irradecent sharks, each prolly 6-7 inches long
-6 red tail tinfoil barbs 1 1/2" -2"
-and 2: 8 inch plecos

do you have a;ll those guys in a 10 gallon. like a lot of people say, convicts would probably breed in a toilet bowl. i probably wouldnt worry to much about the convicts breeding. if theres one female and one male, theyll go at it like rabbits

right now they are in a 55 but i was wondering if moving them would be suggestible i have like a gazilion(like 4) 10 gallons i have set up for breeding guppys

I have a convict that is always digging holes, everytime I vacuum the gravel the next day he(or she) is digging a big hole again

I've always kept convicts alone in a 10g. I had a deep gravel bed of fine river gravel and always had them breeding. It was pretty insane.

It is their nature, as with most cichlids, to rearrange the aquarium gravel. This does not necessarily indicate a potential spawn.

So if i were to just put 2 convicts in a 10 gallon tank, then that would be a big enough tank for them? I'm assuming there couldn't be any other fish in there at that point.

your tank should be fine its the bumble bee that will start killing things first but the plecos will eat the eggs if there is a good pot or cave they will lay eggs

yes I have had to take my convicts out for a nitrate spike and put them in a pale and they laid eggs. I seriously think you could breed them in a glass of water. Just make sure the water temperature is at 78 or above and they will get it on.

Usually cons become super aggressive when it comes to producing eggs, they are very protective , they will not let any fish come near there eggs.
