I am thinking of setting up a 55 gallon tank for convicts. What would be a safe number of convicts for that tank. Also ideas about possible tankmates if any. and any other sugestions you might have

One breeding pair, no tankmate because they will kill them. The parents will fill the tank up themselves with more convicts.

anything that will eat convicts would be a good tankmate I hate convicts! although it is kinda tempting to breed them still horrible fish though...

May I ask why? Did convicts kill your father and rape your mother? Hate is a pretty strong emotion to waste on a fish.

They breed like rats. Best advice buy like 6 smaller ones and wait for a pair to develop and then trade in the rest

nope, cigarettes did that! (hoping someone else watches The Family Guy)

They also have short anal fins while males are bigger and have longer fins.

I just want to add that I've had several females even at a small size with dorsal and anal fin extensions similar to what you'd see on a male. the fin extensions are more to do with the genes of the individual fish imo than the gender.

as for the 55 gallon in question, I think you could go with a single pair of convicts and some type of very fast, top dwelling schooling fish like maybe tiger barbs. I really think in that size tank that a school of tiger barbs would be perfectly fine, especially if you're starting off with juvenile convicts. :)
