Convict "Spawn Kill"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if i remove fry now, will the parents start to court again? in other words can i speed up reproduction by removing fry?

the first few times they spawn they might eat them... its hit or miss.. if you spook them too much they will eat them.. its a "i think you are going to kill them so ill do it myself then i win" sorta thing..
if they dont eat them then they will raise them till they are big enough to "move out".. and they they are just fish in the tank.. they may leave them alone.. they may kill them.. fish are fish so who knows..

so far my 2 breeding pairs are good parents till i have to move the tank around to suck out poop.. the cons are guests in my 10"+ plecos home.. so his health and happiness comes before the cons aka underwaterrats (they eat anything and breed like crazy.. just like rats)

They should be fine in another week or so, after they gain more experience. They won't always be so finicky about it.

well these are going to be feeders for my 2 rope fish so i just wanna get a few batches started :)

Convicts will do the trick...lol

yea i heard they were pretty challenging you know. i was gonna give them a shot and see if i could be one of the first to breed them.
they are very rare to breed in the home aquarium due to the long list of specific requirements like:
-water
-male and female
-and water...
so overall i guess i did pretty well so far
:P

and i just use bbs or frozen daphnia or any small foods even crushed up flake and the suck it up in a turkey baster, then put the tip right above the babies and squirt out a lil food :grinno:

The parents feed them well, I seperarted several of the spawns in half to see if I could do a better job than the parents, nope. I fed micro worms, daphnia, crushed flake, and anything else that was small enough, and the parents still did a better job. Terra cotta post also make great breeding homes.

You have way to much water in there. All you need is:
- male and female
- wa...
I've heard you can breed them in a hot cup of coffee with cream and sugar, as long as it's not decaf.

If you remove the fry make sure you have plenty of hiding places for the female. If she isn't ready to breed and the male is he'll kill her. Once the fry are free swimming I remove a lot of the hiding places. The last time I forgot to put them back when I removed the fry and lost my biggest female.

lol
i have left them in there and think ill just do that till they get bigger. and i dont think i have to worry about the male killing the female, she is a bout 1/3 bigger than he is lol.
thanks for the advice! i will remember that if i remove them eventually
