Convict tank size

I don't think the issue is water quality. I think aggresion is the issue at hand. I would say the more cover (sight barriers) you get in the tank the better. A few small flowerpots would be good for a pair of cons. If the beatings persist, I'd get another female and put her in there with them. The male will most likly pick a female and reject the other one (return her or put her in another tank).
 
just less stuff in the tank means more room to stretch the fins. gravel and some larger rocks should be absolutely fine though. with the exception of a pot cut to fit the female i would think ornamental hiding spots are bunk in a smaller tank. it's like playing hide and seek while holding hands with the seeker.
