I looked for another post on this with no luck. I've got a trio of convicts that I want to breed for live food, nothing new there. My question is, can it safely be done in a 20 long? I'm out of places to put tanks together. If I had another small tank, a ten or twenty to keep the un-occupied female in while she wasn't raising a brood. Or is that just entirely too small?

20 long is a good size, make breeding/hiding places on opposite ends of the tank so they can get away from each other, and the extra 10g for the spare female its a good idea!

Not sure if its just my convicts but they dont fight and breed every 2 weeks in my 15g. Good Luck!

That all depends how you condition them. I've had a pair spawn once and a week later spawn again when I removed most their fry that were free swimming.

Yea I have a breeding pair in a 10 gal. This pair doesn't fight at all, excellent parents in fact. I only devote the one 10 gal to it tho, so I have to regularly buy small convicts. The free swimmers are awesome food for my jag juvies. I've even fed free swimmers to a group of parrotfish. If I setup a fry tank I'd surely have a more viable food source, but I try to pellet train all my fish quickly. The free swimmers are good once or twice a week tho, it's important for your big fish to get a workout chasing food.

A trio will do fine in a 20g long............Put a divider in the tank, and have the extra female on the other side of it.........Later on, if you wish, you can purchase another male and breed the extra female.............TWO pairs in the twenty, DONE THAT BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!I have seen convicts breed in 5g HOME DEPOT buckets..............

yes but like i have said time and time again..just because you CAN do something and they will breed in it does not mean you should.

If you want healthy fish, who make healthy feeders the 20L is best with the spare 10g for the other female.

healthy happy fish = healthy food. ....why do so few people get this?
