Today i picked up a pair of convicts. one male and one female, they are both about 3 inches. the male is chasing the female to the point where fins are ripped and she is hidding in a corner. is the normal?

Thats what usually happens before breeding make sure u have hiding spots in the tank for the female n they will be fine.......

i herd they will breed pretty much anywhere and i bouht them to use their fry as feeders

i use them as feeders aswell but chances are the pair wont breed in that small of a tank being that they are 3 inches already. and if they do theyll prob just eat the eggs because their wont be enough space for the fry to grow up.

I've breed convicts in a ten gallon before. However, your female has no space to hide and could be killed. Which is why you're seeing battle scars

If that happens, buy a bigger female as her replacement. Ive always gone with significantly bigger females
