Convicts in a 55g tank :D

I decided I would try to breed them
How many should I put in a 55g tank? Would 1 male and 1 female work or should I get 2+ pairs?
What are some fish that can mix with them?

They're fish that distract the convicts so they don't attack each other right? What kind of fish should I use?

ya, there gonna be a uber agressive war zone. I guess you could do 2 pairs. But, you would better sucess with one pair. Because the pair would likely eat the other pair's eggs.

Yep dithers are target fish. Basically you want something thats fast, too fast to get caught. Although its normal for a dither to get caught once in awhile. People use certain barbs, danios or tetras.


If you want to make sure you have a pair, grab like 5 small cons, let them pair up and get rid of the rest.

With Con's I would try either a large school of BAT's(Buenos Aires Tetras) or Serpae Tetras.

A true pair will most likely breed to often. A forced pair is a different story. As was stated before I'd buy one male and about 4-5 females and let them pair up then get rid of the rest.

How do I tell which are males/females? I googled it and it said that males have pointier or longer dorsal and anal fins. I found pics of male and female convicts and their fins looked the same

Females will have orange/red on their belly, the males wont. Females are smaller too.
