One way to identify a female convict is that as they mature, their size is way smaller than male and they will develop a gold scale on the side of their body.

A true pair will most likely breed to often. A forced pair is a different story. As was stated before I'd buy one male and about 4-5 females and let them pair up then get rid of the rest.

You should do just one pair if you plan to breed. Soon enough you will have plenty of fish in there. \

Convicts are easy to breed. Just add convicts and water. Seriously.
