Hello, i am building a pond in my backyard and i was wondering if i could have a bunch of cons in there. In the summer the temps are def warm enough. And i will have plenty of plants for shade so it doesnt become too hot. But in the winter it gets to around 35-45F will they survive without a heater??? I have heard of cons living in texas were the winter temps get just as cold so i was not sure if they can survive in my pond. It will be a minimum of 350 gals. And there will be a stream running in to it for airation as well as providing a current. I appreciate any advice, thank you.

yeah that would cause serious chillyness

Well, I think convicts could adapt to the coldness. They've found an Oscar in like 32 degree water in one of the Great Lakes. Convicts are a tropical fish and best kept with a heater. It's better to be safe than sorry.

ive been told that from generation to generation they will adapt with some work just like each generation drop the temp slightly and after a few drops they could be in the range your lookin for, it would take alot of work and attention, but ive heard it works. i was informed that this was the reason WA. state restricts pirahna.i guess a guy did it up north and eventually released some into lakes... ive also heard of doing this with saltwater fish to freshwater but i donno how true that is...maby though

convicts breed quick enough where dropping temp over a few generations wouldn't take too long. they are a pretty hardy fish.
