convicts

if you haven't noticed little con fry swimming in your tank by now, its a good bet the eggs were bunk and eaten by the parents or other tankmates. happens now and then, moreso when starting the breeding marathon.

Theres this ancient genius old man who runs the LFS nearby - great guy full of good stories and advice. He told me something today that made me question his sanity... something along the lines of... if a person were to buy two young convicts... and they weren't male and female... one of them would change sex to breed with the other. He also said they can only do it at a young age, and then they are set for life. I've heard things along these lines with other species and other animals but... is there any truth to it or is it just a myth???

I've been in the hobby for 22 years. The only sex-changing fish I can recall from the top of my head is that saltwater one. Please correct me members, I believe its a wrasse or some sort of parrotfish. Dominant males turn into colorful females. Again, this is coming from the top of my head, please correct this info....

As for Cons changing sex, I have never heard or witnessed of any such experiences.

in a book on breeding fish, i cant rember but it was eaither swordtails or platys that the female can change sex, dosent matter how old it is. But on the other hand it will only happen in a female only enviorment, and it takes a while, also they can not change back.

i believe the majority of sw reef fish, like anemonefish, can gender bend at certain points in their life.

other fish are full blown hermaphrodites, like salmon, and can spawn at will with each other.

not too sure about convicts..

i beg to differ, there are set males and females, when i catch them, you can have a male that will "squirt" (nasty), and you can have full or empty females... i may be wrong, but mistakes are how we learn

google it. fish are pretty kinky.
