im getting my pair of breeding convicts today and i was wondering when i breed them will they take care of the fry? do i have to take out the convicts or will they eat the fry if i leave them in the same tank?
thanks!

they will take very good care of the babies, their first time they may eat the eggs or young fry but they will learn and get it right and take great care of their babies, of course once the fry are large enough to be on their own then they need to be moved but while they are young you should be fine, just feed the fry crushed up flakes, baby brine shrimp or something else small like that GOOD LUCK

ok sounds good, what should i feed the big convicts shrimp and pellets? also how long would it take the fry to reach about 2 inches in size?
my temps at 86 and i do waterchange every week

i would lower your temp to 80, 86 is really high and unnecessary, you should reserve having the temp that high for ich outbreaks. and yes just feed like normal, i would do mainly pellets and then just feed the shrimp as a treat

well im gonna put them in my big tank and keep the temp at 86 because imo 80 is too low and ive gotten ich about 4 times from the temp being at 80. i also add salt to my tank to help get rid of the ich. can the fry and convicts tolerate salt levels. i add the normal dosage.

yeah but what im saying is if you keep it constantly at 86 and then they get ich then it will be a resistant strain that you will end of having to use meds for instead of just warm water and salt, but its your tank so you will do what you think is right, the only time ive gotten ich in my tanks was when there was a temp fluctuation for some reason but yeah cons are fine with salt

ok cool, yeah i only got the ich when the temp was at 80 cus one of my heaters went out and the temp was constant 80. now its a constant 86 and on hot days it gets up to 88, but ive been doing this for a while and seems to be the best option. i dont have any other tanks to seperate the fry from the parents, im going to use them as feeders can i just grow them out with the parents?

how big is the tank and how big do you want the fry to be before feeding them to your other fish? if the tank is big enough and there is plenty of hiding spaces then i dont see why you couldnt grow them out all together, you will probably get multiple batches growing out together though since they will probably breed again before these first babies get big enough, be prepared to have cons coming out your ears lol

Depends on space. Give the babies plenty of places to hide to stay away from the parents when they breed again. I like having a sort of mess of rocks that create a lot of small spaces. Works pretty well. Could divide the tank if it is a 55 or bigger to raise fry.
