Convicts!

I know there are lots of threads regarding breeding these but just looking for some help!

I bought a breeding pair today which in the tank in the pet shop had wrigglers in there with them, they were in a small tank alone.

So I have brought them home and put them into a tank on their own (45ish us gal) and was wondering how long roughly before I should expect some young.

I plan on using them for feeders for my RCK as he grows and a few of my other fish.

Convicts are a great source of easy breeding, them and crayfish i breed just for feeders, a couple of weeks and they will be back at it.
 
We had two pairs of convicts that we picked up at the same time. A normal coloured pair that we chosen out of a tank full of them (un-natural pair), and a gorgeous Pink pair (younger and self chosen pair)

The pink ones laid eggs in a 55G full of a breeding group of peacocks (it was awesome, Pinky the male had the entire 4 foot tank cornered to 1 foot and he and Pinkette had the other 3 feet) and it only took them two days before we had wigglers. The made pair of normals took three or so days to breed, then the female kicked the male out and did the rest on her own!

Convicts - add fish, add water, stir = babies LOL
 
I had one pair that took 3 days to figure it out and another that took 6. Neither was a matched pair to start. I didn't do anything special diet, water, temp or anything wise.
 
i have had my male and female cons for almost a month and only had eggs once. they ate those and now the male just beats the hell out of the female all day long. is this normal?
 
No, it's not normal. Try providing more caves, territories etc. She might not have a place to run to.

The only having eggs once is normal since it does take quite a bit of energy out of the female to lay the eggs. Along with hiding spots inside the tank make sure your not rooting about bothering them. They much rather eat their kids and have the energy to make more than let you eat them.

So long as they don't kill eachother first it might take a few times for them to get it right.
