Convicts

With my experience with Convicts, it's only a matter of time before the tetras and mollys are toast. If you do end up with a breeding pair, understand that tankmates are probably going to be an absolute no go, especially in a tank of that size. Oh, and how many convicts are in there?

The other fish were only in there because they were a present... They are probably going to get dropped off at my nephews house on xmas.... SHHHH... lol... the catfish is going in his own tank with my Red tail Cat... Will the convicts kill the algae eaters...? and there are 3 so far i wanted 4 2 male 2 female but i need to find out what i have now...

1. Males have longer anal and dorsal fins, they also tend to be bigger than the females

2. No...yours might just be getting use to the tank. Give it some time

3. If you don't have a male and female breeding pair of convicts, heres some tankmates that you could consider. It also depends on how big your aquarium is. Jack Dempseys, Green Terrors, Severums, Parrots, & Firemouths are just a few that may be good tankmates. The reason why I say may is because every fish is different, and what works for one person, may not work for others.

1. Not always true, my female and male both have very long trailers off their anal and dorsal fins. Sure fire way to sex Convicts is females have orange bellies and males do not. I've had hundreds from my breeding pair. Some will trick you and develop the orange after a certain size.

2. This. A lot of times cichlids can take hours to a couple weeks to fully adjust to their surroundings when in a new tank.

3. As for tank mates, tank size is crucial with Convicts. They may be small, but a breeding pair will defend their brood with their lives and have been known to kill fish 2-3 times their size to do so. Mine are relentless when spawning.

To the OP, I'd suggest a 40 breeder, 55 long, or 75 gallon tank. Depending on which of those tanks you picked would determine tank mates. I'd also keep an eye on your community fish, Convicts can pack a lot of aggression in them small little bodies and could pick them off one at a time.

They both look to have color on their bellies so female but can't really tell from those pictures. You could do a male and female pair in a 29.

They look pretty stressed in the pics (closed fins and coloration). Give them a bit of time to get used to your tank and its surroundings. You should see some color when they are not so stressed. Then you should be able to sex them easily.
