why am i having problems mating 2 convicts? The male does nothing but hide by the filter. Any suggestions on what to do?

i have 1 thats very colorful which should be the female. it has a lot of orange and blue and the other is not colorful at all and is mostly gray with light colored stripes.

my female has light colored stripes, and male darker ones. Not all females show orange. But idk if they are m and f it should be easy. gl Probly just because you want them to lol. Thats my luck i set up a 20g awhile ago for them to breeed and it took like a month. Now i just added a female to my one tank and she alrdy dug a pit. anyway gl.

the one with the darker is probably stressed (hence the darker colours) and 99.9% of females have orange, i highly doubt you have the 0.01%, sounds like you have two males, separate and i imagine you'll see a big change in the one thats hiding behavior.

Here's the convict we think is a female. I used to have (him/her) in my tank and once I added my new FH (pictured) he/she would not leave his side and constantly followed him around doing the mating dance. Ended up pulling the convict out and putting it with my roommates (original poster) convict in his 20g thinking he had a male. What are your thoughts on it being a male or female convict?

Looks like a female con to me. Note the orange in the belly area.

That's what we figured also.

Here's two new pictures taken just a few minutes ago. The one we believe is a male is all nipped up and a little bit smaller than the one we think is a female. Could that be an issue as well?

^^ The one we believe is a male. The flash makes him look a lot darker than he actually is but there's no orange in the belly. Only way we could get him to the front was to flush him out from behind the filter haha.

Any ideas?

Also, they are the only two in the tank along with a tiny algae eater, so they have the entire tank to themselves basically.

that could be female to. i will try getting a picture of my male and female. My female doesn't show any orange it is just smaller and lighter in color.
