Would two pairs of breeding Convicts ( 3 to 4" ) be ok in a 55 gallon for life, the only other fish in there is a small ( 1" ) Jaguar Cichlid. The Jag will only be there on a temp. basis. One pair has already begun digging a nest. How long does it take for them to lay eggs and how often do they have babies? How many babies per nest can I expect? What do other MFK keepers do with the fry?

hi! ime, 2pairs for 55gs would be great for them even for life!

how long wud take them to breed it? ime, it would go for as short as 3days to one month
depending on the individual.

how often they will have babies? ime, every 2 weeks or so they will lay eggs again.

how many babies? well it will depends on the size of the female. of course large females will lay more eggs than the smaller. u can expect HUNDREDS of them.

what do i do on my fries? i keep em around, theyre so cute and it never ceases to amaze me how the parents take care of em. some hobbyists feed them to their monster fishes and some others sell them to their LFS. personally i wud go for the latter options. :) and buy or trade fishfoods,equipments etc.

have fun with ur cons, theyre trully amazing fishes to have.

That should be enough room.Make a cave at either end of the tank hopefully each pair will pick a side then put a big plant or other decoration in the middle so they dont see each other all the time

Thanks for the help, I will place a piece of driftwood in the middle of the tank to break up there line of site. If they have hudreds of babies I will have no choice but to feed them to my Piranha. The LFS stores near my house won't accept fish brought in because they are scared of diseases.

yep. will be fine for 55.
expect lots of fry, often.

convicts can be a tough sell to lfs, especially if a chain outlet.
private buyers for feeders though...

at least your pet store has some sense, not saying your babies would have diseases but its a good precaution. just get another fish in there that gets around 8 inches and he will eat the babies because the convicts wont want them after they get big.

Pirahna and Jag food, but even the adult Cons will be snacks for him one day.
