Thats so awesome melanistic male. I have some of these spotted type mosquitofish and they are being bred in aquarium. Spotted females are rare but then again, they are bred in aquarium these days and become purebred.

Can I sk you what temp, etc your breeding them at ? As in my case they were not breeding well inside and it was only when I put them outside in sun warm pond did they breed like they should.

The spotted females must be awesome I have never seen one .

here are some pictures of spotted version of both sex

They do better breed if the water temp is 78F or higher. I got the spotted versions from Adrian.

Lol good thing my brother in law doesn't come here. While back he told me he saw spoted females in his area.

I told him as USUAL he was wrong as only males came spotted and that it had to be a mollie . Lol oh well.

I had no idea females came spotted also. I have countless females and roughly 20 spoteed males and no spotted females yet.

great pics thanks

Many of the males I catch have gold flecks and black spots. They can be quite pretty especially when viewed from above.

Yes the Gold flecks are nice had no idea any females came spotted till now have never seen a single spotted female after countless canal ventures trying to catch cichlids . Have seen only spotted males.

I had them at 72 that was probably it in the pond they are in mid 80s and now breed non stop .
Hope to one day get spotted females as find the spotted types neat and have sent some to my friends in NY for their tanks.

Good luck with find spotted females, they are very uncommon in the wild but lately the spotted females are now being bred for aquarium purposes meant the spotted mosquitofish are become purebred, always threw all spotted fry in both sexes.

There are two species that are melanistic/spotted version: Holbrooki and Rhizophorae, I have both speices and they are awesome looking. Have you heard about........melanistic golden topminnows?
