Cooling aquariums in summer months?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Get a couple cheap clip on fans and remove any lids. Evaporation is far more effective than you’d think. Obviously you’d have to top off frequently. In the summer months on my old reef I was evaporating about 2 gallons a day on a 200 gallon system.

Last summer we were able to keep my daughters axolotl tank down to 72 degrees F with fans. It adds a bit of heat to the air and a whole lot of humidity! It also requires frequent top offs.

We just purchased a used 1/3 hp chiller off craigslist for $150 which will easily keep the 55g axolotl tank down at 60-62 degrees which will be much healthier for her axolotyl.

Apparently pot growers use chillers to keep their hydroponic solution cool and upgrade frequently as they expand their indoor fields. The guy we bought ours from was a "Hydroponic engineer"... that reeked of pot.
