Cooling tanks in the summer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sweet fan setup!!!!

I've always heard that the best way to cool a tank is by directing a fan over it and using evaporation to cool it also.

that looks awesome have you ever thought of hooking that up to a temp controler and have it turn on and off like that (sorta like a heater but bckwards)

Yes, in fact if you see the yellow wires in the third pic, the sensors are already there. We have looked at PC temp sensors (the ones you would install in a 5 1/4" CD rom bay) as another cheap solution to this.

Thanks for the good info. I didnt know you could cool a tank by blowing air over the surface , I gotta try that one. I use frozen water in a plastic bottle. Now I gotta find a fan.....lol.......input input ........give me more...lol

turn the heaters of (of coarse) and turn off the lights when you dont need them on, like during the day when its bright enough already

Hey Ar0wan, do those fans blow at the water, or away from the water? Do they blow up or down when the lid is in place? Do they blow up to "aid" evaporation?

Hi

I thought i would give my 2 cents too..

Over here in Japan, the summer is a real killer..my tanks sometimes hit 34 degrees celcious!!

The fan idea works really well!..i have a set of two fans controlled by a thermostat and with this i can get the temp down to a more manageable
30-31 degrees..mine blow down on the water, you have to top up with water pretty much every day, it evaporates quite fast!

Im surprised no one has already mentioned this, If you dont already have one add an air pump with a big airstone. Lack of disolved oxygen will be a bigger problem and an off shoot of the overheating tank tbh.

In taiwan i have the same problems, but mine go up to 31-32 degrees. when i installed fans over the top i found it leaves a film on the water from the pollution. Do you get that too? if you do, how do you combat that?

also my fish dont seem stressed when its that hot (just way more active), i increase aeration and do more frequent water changes.

The top is acyrlic (also custom the original cover was crap) and fits very tight on the top. The fans blow UP, as an exhaust system. There are two 3" or so diameter openings on the back of the tank for the light and water pump power cords (see pic1 there's some light escape against the back wall) which act as intake vents. This was a conscious descision that maximizes the distance between in intake of 'dry' air and exhaust of light heated, 'wet' air.

Reverse the fans on your setup to see if that keeps dust from accumulating on the water surface.
