All you need for sharks is to focus on mechanical filtration and biological. A good canister, pt skimmer and plenty of surface area for bacteria will do. No need for a sump at all if you don't want/need the extra water volume.

how sensitive are sharks to nitrates? i assume with your advise i could use my xp4 canister, my asm g3 skimmer(need a sump for this, but will use my 40g), and bio-balls because i have about 100g worth sitting around. atleast on my 180 till i upgrade.

Depends on who you ask. I've seen them thrive and breeding in nitrates well into the hundreds.

I agree, but obviously you want to keep it as low as possible. No need to stress however if you have some nitrates in your tank.
