just purchased this today, thinking of just using a pump...to run this...not sure what will fit right and which one i should get..

ppl say canisters are the best way for these sterilizers but i see bad ratings on lots of canisters... leaks..etc..

anyone know what kind of powerjet will be good enough??

will a fluval 304 do the job?
 
I want to find a strong reliable pump that doesnt have to be IN the water.
and which will last me a long long time. anyone got some chimes?
 
Use a mag drive 2 pump, you don't want the water moving too fast. It started out as a pump for a hydroponic system, it was given to me and I used it for several years on my wet/dry filter on my 200. I sold that tank but kept the pump for my pond, it was there for 4-5 years before I upgraded my pond filter and i gave it away. As far as I know its still working.
 
Mag drive are great pumps. If you are wanting a cannister, I would recomment Rena XPs all day long.
 
I have used mag drive pumps both submerged and out of the tank. It really doesn't matter although I would probably run it out of the tank. Mag drive 2 pumps have 1/2 pipe threads on both the inlet and outlet. I not sure if they come with fittings. You should be able to find fittings at your local hardware store in the plumbing section. They are about 1$ each. Rena canister filters are great too I have 3 and I'll be putting a 36 watt UV on my XP4 some time today. There are some good deals on ebay now and then, I paid $130 each for my new XP4's after shipping.

how many gallons is your tank?
should i connect the pump to the inlet and a hose connecting to a sponge filter as the inlet head?
 
The tank is a 400 gallon 120L x 32.375W x 24T

Using a sponge as prefilter is a good idea. Also you don't want to big of a UV, they do add some heat to the tank. If you already the Fluval 304 it will work fine.
 
no i dont have the fluval. all i have is the turobtwist 18watt...
thinking of getting the magdrive 2 today

btw nice size tank. the tank i plan on putting this 18w sterilizer is on a 96x30x24. i woulda gone bigger but my house came with a stand looking attachment in the living room which is around that size. didnt wana flush it then my filters would stick out a little.. using HOBs. 1 ac110 and 2 emperor 400.
