Corn Flowering Thing (am I doing something right or wrong?)

Excel should not be double dosed. Excel will kill BBA, but takes a while, and can cause other algae to start growing out of control. A bleach dip is much faster, and easier. Macro nutrients are the primary nutrients nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), or NPK. Testing for NPK involves testing for ammonia, nitrite and nitrates, potassium and phosphorus.

Where did you get those interesting ideas about Excel?

I've also found straight excel sprayed on any BBA-ridden surface like plastic, wood, rock, etc. during a water change kills BBA outright.

I do like the bleach dip too.

N is not nitrates, nitrogen is used best by plants in its ammonia state.

Ammo = 0ppm, nitrite = 0ppm and nitrate is between 10ppm-15ppm. This tanks is in the process of converting to an aquaponics hybrid. The only wildcard the 120 gallon has is, it is in the process slowly dropping to 50/50 RO TAP mix. I am working with a rare SA cichlid species I am trying to spawn. I am doing the same thing on my 10 gallon but the 10 gallon has a very odd yellow "algae/moss" buildup behind the 3D background. I'll get pics up of it tomorrow. That was going to be my next question.

From experience.

I think you are confused.

You're quite right, I am confused as to why you're claiming "Excel will kill BBA, but takes a while, and can cause other algae to start growing out of control" and not providing any information to back it up (except "experience," but there could be a million things that caused algae in your tanks...).

Under what exact circumstances are you applying this very broad statement?

Double dosing excel without knowledge of your current macro nutrients can cause an imbalance of one of the critical nutrients. If this happens, the excel will fuel the growth of several types of algae. While excel does have the ability to kill red alga, it isn't instant.
but there could be a million things that caused algae in your tanks...).
And there are a million things you should know about your tank, before you blindly dose with anything.
