Corn Snake Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't rely on the bulb for personal reasons.
1. Refrigerated Air.
2. It is winter.
3. Those basking bulbs are a waste of money. Especially with a snake.
4. I hate bulbs in general.
It would not be possible for me to maintain a proper thermal gradient in an enclosure more or less the size of a 75 just using only a light.

Use a thermometer with a temp probe, you will know if he's good in there.
Feeding the snake in the enclosure conditions the animal to equate opening the panels with food. Corns are not high on the tough scale, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't think to bite anyway.

You can feed your snake out of its cage but it does not make that much of a difference really. If your snake is eating just fine right now then leave it be. Why ruin a good thing, people only do that to get their snake to not associate opening the cage with food so you dont get bit. Like what Richie said. Honestly though I have a 13ft python that i give a rabbit to every other week in its cage and it knows when its going to be fed. Its never mistaken me for food, but it has almost bit me trying to get the rabbit from my hand (it was really hungry that day :)). Corn snakes do not get that big nor do they hurt when they bite. If your worried about getting attacked keep a spray bottle with white vinegar (not alcohol! that crap will seriously injure your snake anyone who says to use it is an idiot and deserves to be tortured), its harmless and it will make him immediately open his mouth and let go while teaching him that he doesn't ever want to bite you again cause you taste terrible. Ive never had to use my bottle but its better to be safe then sorry. Use precautions especially during mating season (bow chika wow wow :)) I hope this answered your question.

Richie, What do you use if you dont use bulbs? Bulbs are very important to raising a reptile how do you substitute that? Im not flaming you or anything im just curious to see if you know of another way that i dont know of, thats all :)

Hey Everybody,

For my B-Day I went to yesterdays expo in white plains. I ended up cming home with a Baby Ultrared Anery Corn Snake. I asked the vendor questions and tips. He gave me his email for any furhter questions or concerns. I researched plenty before I decided on purchasing one.

Does anyone have an adult pic of these corn snake's?
(Vendor tried explaining to me....google pic's gave me lots of other color morphs)

The vendor say's he feeds the one month old corn snakes a pinky every thursday. The pinkies that I bought at another vendor are about half an inch, is still one every thursday good for a foot long baby corn?

The Set Up is so far:

48in x 18in x 18in wooden cage with sliding doors
Reptile Carpet (Any sites for custom carpet sizes?)
1 Hide in Cold Side
1 Hide in Hot Side
1 Grape Vine Tree in the middle of thank
3 Mag naturals
1 Water Bowl

Should I purchased florescent lighting and is their any heat mats or safe heat rocks that I can use?

I asked above about the florescent lighting cause thier are lots of opinions on that especially breeders with rack systems.

Thank You guys, I will try to post a pic of him.....also any recommended handling times of the day and how to? I've been letting him slid on one hand to the next and son on....

Also anyone else went to the expo post reptiles purchased, equipment and set ups would be cool too!
take a look online. many pics available. size as adult is about garter snake size.
hardest part is to keep up with juvenile feeding regime. contact herpetological society in your area for advice. I am thinking pinkies (baby mice) but they would help source. Nice snake very even tempered good luck

good advice here. all mine r in storage boxes, brilliant things lol.
i wouldnt worry about being bitten though, its like velcro...although saying that iv never been bitten by anything other than a 12ft burm. but yesterday one of my corns bit my friend, not sure why, quite out of the blue but she didnt even feel it.

Probably the same way that I do - by using undertank heaters hooked up to a rheostat/thermostat.

Infrared heating. I don't like cables or mats

This is one of my favorite products for bigger snakes. More efficient that a CHE from zoo med, and I don't burn myself because I am not patient enough for CHEs to cool down.
Lizards and turtles are obviously a different story, but for snakes I do not bother with anything more than a 100w low, or a floodlight.

If that bulb does what it claims, I;ll pick one up and try it out. I currently have heat cable....but know where for the plug to get out of the enclosure with out my corn escaping....
