Silicon won't stick to a wet surface. Is it leaking around a bulkhead or a seam? If it's a bulkhead try tightening it. If it's a seam, either drain the tank and reseal it or prepare for a possible flood.
If it's between the burger and the buns you need more ketchup.
:iagree:
No easy way out. I`d be looking for a good place to house your fish, while you fix the tank.
1 or 2 plastic tubs should do.

you have to drain the tank right under the overflow and let the bottom of the overflow dry up. Put an power head/air pump in the tank while you are fixing it. Seal the leak with some silicon. Then fill it back up once the silicon dry up.

Actually there is a easier way out, if it's leaking from a bulkhead tightening shouldn't be too difficult, and worst comes to worst you just have to bite the bullet and buy some new ones. If it's leaking from the seam, look up Durso standpipes and go to your local HD and build one, this way the tank will only drain to the height of the Durso, not all the way down to the leak.

Its leaking around the bulkheads, how are you not getting the hamburger analogy? I thought it was perfect! I obviously drained the tank below the overflow and I am drying it out now. I do realize that silicon wont stick to anything thats wet.

If it's the bulkheads, what's the silicon for?

I would just replace the seal on the bulkhead. They are about $0.40 each. Silicone might work for a patch fix as well. Unscrew bulkhead, insert silicone, let cure for a few, then tighten.

Ahhhh, if the bulkhead and tank were a hamburger.....gotcha!

I have seen bulkheads loosen, I would try that first. I am guessing with your responses that you don't have an over flow compartment in your tank? If tightening the bulkhead doesn't work then your just going to have to drain and replace the seal as has been stated a few times here.

There is an overflow compartment, but I have to lift the tank to get to hte bottom part of the bulkheads. I drained the water, moved all my fish to a 55 gallon holding tank, and took the bulkheads out. I them proceeded to clean them and scrape away all the silicon in the bottom of the overflow around the holes. I then sandwiched some silicon between the o-ring and the bulkhead and screwed them in as tight as i could get them. I think that the problem was that they were loose and one was sitting cockeyed in the hole. I think that I have solved the problem, but I will let you all know tomorrow night.

Stop system,

Syphon overflo out and sponge now it is dry to take off bulk head and make sure the gasket is opposite the nut and you should be able to hand tighten if not a 1/4 turn with a big channel lock pliers.:headbang2that is why we call it wet world.

everything has been running for 24 hours with no leaks. I had to take the smaller bulkhead out and strip the silicon off of it. The silicon was making the o-ring slide out from under the bulkhead as I tightened it aka causing a leak. So minus the silicon it tightened right up and is sealed off nicely! Thanks guys for the help and advice!
